The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
