Elite Athletes Appeal on Iran to Halt Execution of Boxing Champion
More than 20 Olympic champions, trainers and other world-class competitors have signed a statement calling for a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and coach, who is on death row in Iran.
Escalating Worldwide Condemnation
Amid increasing international outrage over the nation's expanding employment of the death penalty as a means of oppression, the forcefully phrased letter censures the government's decision to uphold the execution order of the boxing champion.
Vafaei Sani, 30, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was arrested for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in 2019 and charged of aiding an opposition group. He has spent 60 months in incarceration, where he has been abused and kept in solitary confinement.
“Athletics is meant to promote faith, unity, and bravery,” the signatories stated. “The capital punishment of a titleholder for his beliefs is a direct assault on these ideals and a warning to any competitor who attempts to speak out.
History of Killing Competitors
The appeal noted that the boxer's situation was not an isolated one and highlighted the nation's past of putting to death athletes for their views, for example a national team leader, leader of the soccer squad, and a volleyball captain, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. In the year 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year national wrestling champion, was also executed.

Urging to United Nations
The urging to halt the boxer's death sentence is subsequent to a earlier letter to the UN high commissioner for rights, backed by over one hundred advocates and organizations, urging action to avert the athlete’s capital punishment.
Death Penalty Surge
